MJF Vs. Kenny Omega AEW World Championship Plans Changed ‘Very Recently’

Kenny Omega is challenging MJF for the AEW World Championship at next Wednesday’s Beach Break edition of Dynamite, but that seemingly wasn’t always the plan.

The July 1 episode of AEW Dynamite saw MJF retain the World Championship against Mark Briscoe, with Kenny Omega making his presence felt post-match.

This would all set up Omega to challenge MJF for the AEW World Championship, with the Salt of the Earth offering the stipulation that The Cleaner losing would mean he could never go after the title again.

With that match set for the Beach Break episode of AEW Dynamite, Bryan Alvarez has shed light on when it was supposed to happen during a conversation on Wrestling Observer Radio.

According to Alvarez, the decision to run Omega vs MJF next week was one made “very recently”, stating:

“All I know is they decided to move the MJF Kenny Omega match up. I don’t know why.

“This was apparently something that was decided very recently, clearly because it’s a Canadian show called Redemption, and that was gonna be the match. And then somebody decided, we’re gonna do it next week.”

AEW Redemption takes place on July 26 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, marking the first time an All Elite Wrestling pay-per-view has taken place in the city.

Tony Khan recently confirmed on Twitter that the start time of AEW Redemption has moved to 7 PM ET, with the Buy In starting an hour earlier.

A Top-Tier Title Match On Television

Not for the first time, the AEW World Championship is being defending on Dynamite, yet the match against Kenny Omega has a different feel to it.

With two previous matches under their belt, MJF has defended against Kenny Omega twice. Their first encounter took place on Collision back in October 2023, with the second instalment taking place at AEW Dynasty in April of last year.

With such a far-reaching stipulation as was put forward last night, the idea that Omega won’t be able to challenge for the AEW World Championship again and for such a match to take place on Dynamite is a bold decision.

A Canada native, Omega lost to MJF at AEW Dynasty, which took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, so a home territory return for The Cleaner in such a high-profile match would have seemed like an obvious choice. The fans at the Bell Centre in Montreal would have been on their feet for the star and one can only imagine the reaction he would have received, win or lose.

Looking ahead, however, the result at Redemption could have an impact on AEW All In, which takes place on August 30 in London, England. Will Ospreay, having won the men’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament final, recently spoke about his journey to main event the hometown event with the type of raw emotion you’d expect from the star.

The passionate and driven Will Ospreay taking on the arrogant MJF for the AEW World Championship is surely the match that many fans want to see, particularly with how far both men have been seen to go. Omega, however, has recently spoken of potentially securing a championship run, which may still happen.
