With the reviews of AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door still coming in, Will Ospreay has broken an impressive star ratings record.
Although the Will Ospreay vs Kenny Omega match for the IWGP United States Championship would feature a ‘controversial‘ move, the match was broadly well received, with Dave Meltzer giving it six stars in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
As Chris Van Vliet noted in an interview with Ospreay, he currently has more five-star or higher matches than WWE and NXT combined.
At the time of the interview, Ospreay had 25 matches rated five-star or higher by Dave Meltzer, compared to 18 held by WWE and NXT.
At the time of the interview, Ospreay tied with Mitsuharu Misawa whose five-star matches dated from June 1990 to March 2003.
With a record spanning almost 13 years, Misawa’s achievement was a great one but has now been shattered by Ospreay whose first five-star match came in September 2016 when the Superkliq (Adam Cole, Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson) faced Ospreay, Ricochet & Matt Sydal at PWG Battle of Los Angeles Night 2.
Ospreay’s record spans companies around the globe, with both his 2023 singles matches against Kenny Omega scoring highly.
His match against Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 17 in January 2023 scored 6.25 stars, with the sequel at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door landing at six-star reveal to take his tally above Misawa.
Ospreay has recently discussed the possibility of a decider match with Omega, stating that he’s interested in new challenges for now.
Off the back of his match with Omega and the controversy of the Tiger Driver 91, Ospreay released a new T-shirt.
Kyle Fletcher recently discussed Will Ospreay, describing his United Empire teammate as “the greatest wrestler alive today.”
