It’s being reported that NXT referee Aja Smith is backstage at the WWE ThunderDome for today’s SmackDown taping.
Fightful Select broke the news, but there’s no word on the reason Smith is there.
WWE has held ‘tryout’ matches at Raw and SmackDown for NXT stars Bronson Reed, Karrion Kross, Scarlett and Shotzi Blackheart in recent weeks, so Smith could be in the same boat.
Reed dropped the NXT North American Championship to Isaiah Scott this past Tuesday, leading many to believe he’s on the verge of a call-up to the main roster.
It was reported that he and Kross had been added to the list of names that were set to be called up after their first ‘tryout’ matches.
Smith was signed by WWE last year and has been a referee in NXT since then. She’s also in a relationship with NXT’s Leon Ruff.
