NXT Takeover: New York Officially Highest Rated Show Ever

NXT Takeover: New York Officially Highest Rated Show Ever

Dave Meltzer’s latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter included star ratings for not only WrestleMania 35, but also for the exceptional NXT Takeover: New York event which took place two days prior.

Meltzer gave the fantastic main event where Johnny Gargano defeated Adam Cole to capture the NXT Championship five and a half stars. This makes it the highest rated WWE match of all time.

However, Cole vs. Gargano was not the only match that Dave Meltzer was praising in his review of the show. Below are the star ratings that Meltzer gave for all of the five matches on the show:

  1. War Raiders def. Aleister Black and Ricochet- 4.5 stars
  2. Velveteen Dream def. Matt Riddle- 4.5 stars
  3. WALTER def. Pete Dunne- 4.75 stars
  4. Shayna Baszler def. Bianca Belair, Io Shirai and Kairi Sane- 3.75 stars
  5. Johnny Gargano def. Adam Cole- 5.5 stars

Meltzer was clearly very high on the event, with his lowest-rated match on this card being the Women’s Championship match which he gave three and three-quarter stars. This match would have been the second highest rated match should it have taken place two nights later inside MetLife Stadium at WrestleMania 35, with only Kofi Kingston vs. Daniel Bryan being rated higher. This speaks volumes of how great NXT is compared to main roster WWE.

However, the main thing to take away from this is that Meltzer’s average rating for the show, 4.6 stars, makes it not only the highest rated show in WWE’s history but the highest rated show EVER.

The previous highest-rated show was NXT Takeover: War Games II from 2018 with a 4.12 average. This makes NXT Takeover: New York considerably the best-rated show. NXT now has four of the top five best ever shows according to Dave Meltzer, in terms of star rating average. This shows just how great the black and gold brand is.
