Original Plan For Rey Mysterio Vs Santos Escobar US Title Invitational Final

Original Plan For Rey Mysterio Vs Santos Escobar US Title Invitational Final WWE

The original plan for the Rey Mysterio vs Santos Escobar US Title Invitational tournament final has now been revealed, following the match stoppage.

The all-LWO final match was abruptly stopped during Friday’s (July 28) edition of SmackDown.

After Santos Escobar dropped Rey Mysterio with a dive, ringside doctors checked on Rey Mysterio, before referee Jessika Carr stated that Mysterio was unable to compete so the win was awarded to Escobar.

PWInsider now reports that the original plan for the match was for Escobar to win via pinfall, so one way or another, WWE always planned for Escobar to win the match.

Escobar is now set to challenge for Austin Theory’s US Championship on the August 11 edition of SmackDown.

There have been conflicting reports surrounding Rey Mysterio’s injury following the bout.

While WRKD Wrestling has reported that Mysterio’s injury on SmackDown was just a storyline, PWInsider reports that several WWE sources confirmed to them that Mysterio’s injury was legitimate.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, who initially reported the injury was a storyline but then clarified that he’d heard conflicting info, appears to have corroborated PWInsider’s reports, taking to Twitter to note:

After speaking with additional sources, we’ve learned the Mysterio injury was not storyline as originally suggested.

Santos Escobar was scheduled to go over clean and there was to be a backstage segment follow up that got nixed.

We will continue to provide updates on Rey Mysterio as they become available.

We wish Rey Mysterio a safe and healthy recovery.
