Penta has reflected on his time in Lucha Underground and how it influences his WWE work today, praising IYO SKY and Chelsea Green.
Long before signing with either AEW or WWE, Penta appeared in Lucha Underground, a promotion that saw stars from AAA and the independent wrestling circuit in the United States and Mexico compete on a weekly show.
Appearing as Pentagon Dark, the future WWE star would encounter Hitokiri, now known as IYO SKY, and Reklusa, better known as Chelsea Green, among his opponents between 2014 and 2018.
The importance of Lucha Underground on Penta’s career was explored during a recent appearance on Battleground Podcast, with the star revealing he still uses what he learned there in WWE today, saying:
“Every step of my career was important, so Lucha Underground was a big point in my career, absolutely.
“I loved Lucha Underground. I love everything that happened there because I think, in my mind or my opinion, Lucha Underground was my high school in this sport.
“So, now, I wanna show the world who the real Penta is, you know? Who the Penta is now, as a person.
“Lucha Underground was amazing. A lot of big matches, crazy matches. I love Lucha Underground. That’s why, now, I put into my work every single thing that I learned from Lucha Underground.”

Looking back at his matches against Green and SKY, Penta was equally as enthusiastic with his praise, recalling:
“Both matches were amazing, different kinds of matches, because IYO, in that moment, had a faction with the other girls, and Chelsea was very different because the thing with her was very special… very violent. So, like, Lucha Extrema.
“I think that’s why this was very impactful for everyone, because I think, many years ago, you can show something like that. But, for me, I prefer, say, IYO and Chelsea, one of the best (women) in the world.”

SKY, as Hitokiri, saw a victory over Pentagon Dark at Lucha Underground Breaker of Bones in 2016, while the Mexican star would score the win over Reklusa in October 2018.

In The Shadow Of Greatness
A weekly wrestling show that was broadcast internationally, eventually finding its way to Netflix, produced by MGM Television, United Artists and One Three Media, Lucha Underground shone bright across its four-season lifespan.
Much of what made it stand out is what many fans would expect from televised wrestling programming today, with a focus on cinematic presentation made all the more startling given the intimate nature of its 350-set Los Angeles home venue.
There were storylines and impressive in-ring action, of course, but Lucha Underground also brought sci-fi and supernatural spectacle to proceedings, leaning into the entertainment angle of the “sports entertainment”.
A mix of talent from across the world, under the guidance of television producer Mark Burnett and Hollywood movie maker Robert Rodriguez, fans were given the best of both worlds in the form of a wrestling product that played to a devoted audience of fans.
Lucha Underground would come to an end in late 2018, mere months before the launch of AEW.
