On Sunday night in the main event of Impact Slammiversary XVII, Sami Callihan defeated Tessa Blanchard in an Intergender match.
While Callihan might have picked up the win in the 15-minute clash, Dave Meltzer stated on the Wrestling Observer Radio that the match was all about showcasing Tessa Blanchard.
Because Tessa was put over so strong in the match, some have questioned why she wasn’t given the win in the history-making main event.
Rumours even emerged suggesting that Callihan had refused to let Blanchard beat him. However, Meltzer has said that the planned finish was always going to see Sami picked up the win over the talented Blanchard. He also noted that the rumours circulating that the reason Sami won is because he refused to be beaten by Blanchard are untrue.
The decision was reportedly made to have Callihan go over as there was concern backstage that Tessa Blanchard would garner “Roman Reigns-like heat” if the company had her defeat Callihan. Meltzer said that the promotion are fearful of the fan backlash if they push Tessa Blanchard too hard, despite her undeniable ability.
There is currently no word on whether a second match between the pair is being planned, and if Blanchard will be chosen to go over in said bout if it does happen.
