It was a pretty successful week for Roman Reigns really. He returned at Summerslam, and less than a week later he was pinning Braun Strowman to become the new Universal Champion, barely taking a bump in the process.
Aligning himself with Paul Heyman almost made Roman the biggest heel in the company overnight, but it wasn’t clear who had actually made the call for the turn to take place. Fans have been calling for a heel Roman Reigns for years, but it seemed until now that Vince saw Roman as a the new John Cena.
While we still don’t know who pulled the trigger on the turn, we do now know that it was Roman himself who suggested it. Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer explained that Reigns was the one who asked for it.
“It’s not known whether it was Reigns or McMahon who made the call to put Heyman with Reigns, but Reigns did ask to be turned heel on his return after being out of action since March due to concerns over COVID-19.”
Reigns will likely be a big part of tonight’s SmackDown show, so we’ll hopefully get a bit more character development from him and Heyman. Given their history of being against each other, it will be interesting to see how WWE explains their new understanding.
