On Thursday (February 4), SmackDown star Steve Cutler was released by WWE, and since his release, more details have been emerging as to why.
It has already been reported that Cutler had serious backstage heat with Vince McMahon as the result of a positive Covid-19 test in early January, and we now know a bit more about it.
The report is that Vince was “livid” after the test, which led to Cutler missing a week of TV, and subsequently an angle involving Baron Corbin and his Knights of the Lone Wolf had to be scrapped.
The Wrestling Observer has now updated its earlier report, and now states that it is believed Cutler caught Covid-19 at his New Year’s Eve party.
It is thought that Vince was particularly angry with Cutler as he had promised a number of stars, including Roman Reigns, that when they returned to work after New Year, it would be to a safe working environment.
The Observer noted that Cutler is likely the first wrestler to be fired due to Covid-19. A Fightful report added that Cutler had been taking bumps for some of WWE’s “big men” in training, and we now know that Cutler was in one of these classes at the time of his firing.
