The backstage reaction to former NXT star Mercedes Martinez signing with AEW has reportedly been revealed.
Martinez returned to the promotion during Wednesday’s Dynamite: New Year’s Smash show, attacking Thunder Rosa. The wrestling veteran had previously wrestled for AEW in 2019, notably competing as the Joker entrant in the Casino Battle Royale at AEW’s second pay-per-view, All Out.
Martinez chose to sign with WWE in January 2020, appearing on NXT – and briefly on Raw, as part of RETRIBUTION – until her release from the company in August 2021.
Following reports about tribalism backstage within WWE and AEW, it had been speculated that there was heat on Martinez for choosing to sign with AEW, only after getting let go by WWE.
As per Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, this has not been the case. During a Fightful Q&A show, Sapp stated that there is a lot of positivity surrounding Martinez’ signing, noting:
“I haven’t heard of any (heat). I’ve actually heard of people who were very happy that Mercedes was brought in, and they wanted more experience. They think she can help along the lines of what Serena Deeb is doing. So, there’s a lot of positivity around her signing.”
After a number of high profile signings in 2021, Khan has admitted that AEW needs to be ‘more discerning than ever’ with future acquisitions.
