‘I Definitely Want To Be A Fighting Champion’ – Sol Ruca Wants To Defend WWE Intercontinental Title As Much As Physically Possible, Including Against NXT Stars

Sol Ruca has defined how she sees her WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship reign evolving after beating Becky Lynch at Clash in Italy.

Having been called up to the main roster in April of this year, Sol Ruca suffered a number of losses ahead of defeating Becky Lynch at WWE Clash in Italy on May 31.

Speaking on the WWE Clash in Italy Recap, Ruca laid out her plans for her newly won championship, while reflecting on past title reigns of her own, saying:

“I definitely want to be a fighting champion. I want to defend this thing as many times as I physically possibly can.

“I was a double champion on NXT with the Women’s Speed Championship and the North American Championship, and I feel like my reigns were not up to par with how I feel like I can be as a champion. I’m wanting to prove myself a bit more as a champion this time.

“I want to give championship opportunities to literally whoever comes and whoever’s ready. I don’t want to be the person that says ‘You’re not ready to be here’ – shots at Becky Lynch for doing that to me. I want to be the person that’s open and potentially bring in some girls from NXT to defend this title against.”

Lynch had, indeed, stated that Ruca was “not ready” in comments made before the Clash in Italy PLE, with the young star having lost her two singles matches on WWE Raw after being called up. She did, however, score a win over Lynch via DQ on the May 23 edition of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.

A Fighting Champion, You Say?

If Ruca gets her way, the idea of testing herself against main roster and NXT stars alike has legs.

An arguably lackluster in-ring record on WWE Raw to date, as Women’s Intercontinental Champion, there’s no doubt opportunity to play with the formula of “who has she beaten?” and for Lynch to make her presence felt, like a vulture waiting for its prey to pass.

The idea of Ruca opening up the title in this way could follow a similar theme to watching Darby Allin during his AEW World Championship run. He could have had matches with a specific category of star, yet following his victory over MJF at Spring BreakThru and loss to the star at Double or Nothing, he faced quite the selection – Tommaso Ciampa, Brody King, Kevin Knight, PAC, Konosuke Takeshita, Sammy Guevara and Mike Bailey.

Ruca could follow a similar path in WWE, benefiting from opportunities against main roster and SmackDown stars, although also has the Queen of the Ring Tournament to look forward to. She faces Lyra Valkyria, Charlotte Flair and Jade Cargill, the latter two having issues of their own, all of whom are hoping to progress to the finals at Night of Champions on June 27.

Then there’s the as-yet-undetermined John Cena Classic, which will see the champion crowned based on fan votes, offering main roster vs NXT star matches.

Multiple opportunities exist for Ruca to demonstrate her fighting champion ambitions, not just as a title holder but as a star in general, and it’s clear that WWE are putting their weight behind her.
