A spoiler has emerged regarding upcoming plans for Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn after he won the title this past weekend.
Zayn won the WWE Night of Champions main event against GUNTHER and defending champion Cody Rhodes to become Undisputed WWE Champion.
Zayn wasn’t on tonight’s Raw, but this week’s SmackDown was taped immediately afterwards due to Friday being the night before the Fourth of July.
John Clark on social media shared some spoilers from the SmackDown taping, which includes a look at Zayn’s upcoming plans including a title defense coming very soon.
During the WWE SmackDown taping, Zayn opened the show and called out the fans for turning on him before he was interrupted by former champion Cody Rhodes.
Rhodes congratulated Zayn and was about to leave, but they were interrupted by Jey Uso, who was recently sent after the Undisputed WWE Title by World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns.
The result was that Adam Pearce – filling in for SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis who in storyline has been placed on “administrative leave” after a confrontation with GUNTHER on the Night of Champions post show – setting up a main event for SmackDown between Rhodes and Uso, with the winner earning a WWE Title shot against Zayn on next Monday’s Raw in Chicago.
The rest of SmackDown then happened before the main event between Rhodes and Uso took place, and it was Rhodes who scored the win.
That means, on the July 6 episode of Raw in Chicago, Cody Rhodes will challenge Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
CM Punk’s Big Return In Chicago?
As noted, WWE Raw takes place in Chicago and will host the big Zayn vs Rhodes WWE Title match.
It’s uncommon for SmackDown’s top title to be defended on Raw, which means there’s probably a notable reason why it’s happening.
That reason could very well be the return of CM Punk, who has been absent since the post-WrestleMania episode of Raw in April, when he targeted the Undisputed WWE Title that was then held by Rhodes.
Punk is reportedly planned to be part of the SmackDown brand when he returns, but he had been pushing for his comeback in his hometown of Chicago, so this situation seems to add up to him returning on this show, and then the fallout will happen between the three of them on SmackDown in the following weeks.
