The XFL’s New Sheriff

The XFL’s New Sheriff

In a move that shocks and encourages fans, Vince McMahon has hired Oliver Luck, father of Indianapolis Colts Quarter Back Andrew Luck, to head up 2020’s incarnation of the XFL.

As reported by Steve DelVecchio of MSN, Oliver Luck is a major hire for McMahon, and goes a long way to give the XFL more credibility. Luck’s credentials in the game of American football are numerous. They include serving as president of NFL Europe, Athletic Director of West Virginia University, and his current position working in the Eligibility Center of the NCAA. In his playing days, Oliver Luck was a quarterback for the Houston Oilers.

The decision to bring Oliver Luck aboard is being widely praised as a push in the right direction. Twenty years ago the XFL flopped, and was viewed as too-closely associated with sports entertainment and WWE. Luck brings with him that much needed sense of credibility the experimental football league needs. One wonders how much control and decision-making power the new commissioner will have (of course, maybe I’m the one stuck in a pro wrestling frame of mind) but in the official announcement Luck said:

“I’m thrilled to have the unique opportunity to reimagine the game. I’m excited to present a dynamic version of America’s favorite sport.”

When the ‘Extra Fun League’ 2.0 was first announced, it felt destined to fail.

The XFL has already experienced some controversies this year,  but the hiring of Oliver Luck is the kind of good news that may cause skeptics to re-think their condemnations of the league.
