Thunder Rosa Reveals How Dustin Rhodes Comforted Her Before Britt Baker ‘Lights Out’ Match (Exclusive)

Thunder Rosa has opened up about how Dustin Rhodes comforted her in the build-up to last year’s ‘lights out’ match against Britt Baker.

Baker and Rosa are set for their third one-on-one encounter on tonight’s St Patrick’s Day Slam edition of AEW Dynamite, this time in a steel cage, but at the same event last year, they made headlines with their ‘lights out’ match.

That match was the first women’s main event in AEW, which brought with it a lot of added pressure, which, of course, they both more than lived up to.

Speaking on the WrestleTalk podcast, Thunder Rosa recalled the anticipation ahead of that match last year, and how Dustin Rhodes – a trainer for the AEW women’s division – helped her get over the nerves. She said:

“It was really hard, doubt starts trickling in, your mind starts playing games with you, telling you you’re not good enough, you’re not gonna make it.

“At that moment in my career, I was in very particular thing with NWA and AEW, I was afraid of being hurt, severely hurt, because I had never done freaking hardcore match in my life, and so I had to turn it up a notch a little bit more and again it was just like we had a lot at stake.

“Something like this had never been done before in mainstream (wrestling), not in professional wrestling – there’s been a lot of deathmatches before, women who have done deathmatches and crazy stuff – but never in mainstream, so it was really huge, and I was feeling a certain type of way, but in the end I have those that are always in my ear, who cheer me up, which is my husband of course, and Dustin Rhodes.

“Dustin was right there, kissed me on the forehead and he’s like, ‘Melissa you are destined for greatness, you cannot be questioning yourself and what’s about to happen to today, you’re about to change, you guys are about to change stuff for the rest of history’, and I was like, ‘Okay!'”
