WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H has addressed the Undisputed Championship match announced for SummerSlam on August 1 and 2.

After winning the Undisputed WWE Title from Sami Zayn on Raw, CM Punk’s return to SmackDown turned out to be significant, with his SummerSlam opponent being confirmed.

Punk was confronted by Cody Rhodes during the July 10 SmackDown episode, leading to Rhodes issuing a challenge for SummerSlam, and Punk accepting.

Triple H has now taken to Twitter to comment on this match-up.

Highlighting the build, Triple H wrote:

CM Punk vs Cody Rhodes is a match which has been teased since Punk’s WWE return.

The two stars briefly crossed paths backstage on the December 8, 2023 SmackDown episode, ahead of their exciting war of words on the January 22, 2024 edition of Raw, in the lead-up to the Royal Rumble match.

Cody Rhodes won the 2024 Rumble, last eliminating CM Punk, who moments before his elimination shouted that he didn’t wait ten years to lose to “Dusty’s kid”.

The duo have shared several in-ring segments since then, with the duo notably wishing each other luck on the edition of SmackDown before WrestleMania 42, and meeting again on the Raw after WrestleMania, following Punk losing the World Heavyweight Championship.

It will be interesting to see which way the match goes at SummerSlam. While Cody Rhodes has proven himself as a dependable top champion, it feels too soon for CM Punk to lose the gold, especially after fans were disappointed with Sami Zayn’s reign ending after just nine days.

Another WWE star has addressed Zayn’s title loss, believing that he will become a “massive, massive babyface” following his brief world championship run.
