Updates On Rumored AEW Release Requests AEW

Amid many rumours of backstage issues in AEW in recent weeks, rumours have emerged about several current AEW stars being unhappy in the company, coming from various sources, both reliable and not-so reliable.

Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc appeared to report earlier today that Malakai Black had requested his release from AEW, with it not being granted, before he then deleted his tweet, as the account cited was a fake account of Dave Meltzer.

However, this led to Fightful Select (subscription required) doing some digging regarding these rumours, and there appears to be no smoke without fire.

Fightful notes that one of the ‘unreliable’ sources claimed on Wednesday that Malakai had been released by AEW. AEW reps quickly shot that down to Fightful as completely false, before he was booked for this Sunday’s All Out show later that night. On Giri’s report, Fightful notes that they had heard that rumor within the AEW roster that Black had been unhappy, but the reason why wasn’t something that they could report on without confirming first-hand.

There were outside sources that had indicated that Black had asked for his release, but Fightful was not able to confirm that with the company itself. AEW sources that Fightful spoke to that claimed Black wasn’t happy, also said that they believe things had been smoothed over to some degree. Black is signed to a five-year AEW contract that has four years left on it.

Another name that was rumoured by one of the unreliable posters was former TNT Champion Miro, claiming that he had also asked for his release. This was also shot down, repeatedly by sources who would by familiar with such a situation. Miro re-signed with AEW in late 2021, which will keep him with the company until early 2026.
