The handling of Gunther (WALTER) on the WWE main roster has been very well received since his arrival back in April, with him already capturing the Intercontinental Championship and main eventing episodes of SmackDown.
Gunther’s entire run has been as part of the SmackDown brand, with a one off appearance on Raw back on July 4, where he defeated R-Truth who was dressed as Uncle Sam.
Apparently, that one segment would have been enough to completely change his WWE career, if Vince McMahon was still in power. Per WrestleVotes, those in power ‘soured’ on Gunther following his appearance on the show, to the point where a burial on TV was planned.
They tweeted:
Following his appearance on RAW on 7/4, those in power at the time really soured on Gunther for whatever ridiculous reason. To the point where a burial on TV was coming. Just a month later and quite the difference…
Instead of a ridiculous burial, Gunther main evented last night’s SmackDown in an Intercontinental Championship match with Shinsuke Nakamura.
