William Regal Says Roddy Piper Would’ve ‘Seen Straight Through’ MJF AEW

William Regal has taken the opportunity to look at the work of fellow AEW performer MJF and compare him to the villains of old, in particular Roddy Piper.

Speaking on the Gentlemen Villain podcast, Regal noted that he’s always thought that MJF had the potential to become a top star, stating:

“I’ve always seen the potential in him. Not sure I like the way he goes about doing stuff. If you want to be a real bad guy, there are things that you can do and things that you can’t.”

Furthering his analysis of Friedman, Regal said:

“I used this term on AEW the other week and it’s only a few people know this term. O-D-V, which is an ordinary decent villain.

“Anybody who signs up to be a pro wrestler, you’re fair game for anything my wicked mind wants to do to you. But if they don’t, you leave them alone.”

It isn’t just being an O-D-V in modern times that Regal thinks is important, as he took the opportunity to contextualise MJF’s attitude with that of a wrestling legend, Rowdy Roddy Piper:

“Roddy Piper would have seen straight through him. He would have gone ‘this is a lad who’s not grown up the same as us.’ He’s not got the same mentality.

“You might think you’re a bad guy, you might want to act like a bad guy. But there’s a difference there’s a big difference and very few people know that. A lot of people who got through this job by just acting like a bad guy.”

Hopefully MJF will continue to listen to the advice of a man who has decades of experience across the industry in multiple capacities in front of the camera and behind the scenes, Regal is one of a number of performers uniquely positioned to leverage their knowledge to the newer wrestlers in the industry.

Following his Casino Ladder Match win at All Out, MJF now holds a poker chip which he can cash in for an AEW World Title shot at any AEW show.
