WrestleMania 34 Preview – Purple On The Pre-Show… Again

WrestleMania 34 Preview – Purple On The Pre-Show… Again

On this week’s 205 Live, the purple brand’s General Manager Drake Maverick gave an impassioned promo on the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’. He urged fans to tune-in early and soak in the atmosphere that will be created by the WWE Cruiserweight Championship match between Cedric Alexander and Mustafa Ali… because it’s on the Pre-Show again so you’ll have to tune-in early in order to watch it.

Despite this upsetting realization, Maverick went on to preach that when all is said and done, the match everyone will be talking about is this one and in all honesty, he could definitely be right. Forget Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar, forget Ronda Rousey and Daniel Bryan (sorry Daniel, I love you), this is the one that will steal the show. Sure, AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura is a dream match revisited and the SmackDown Live tag team division is insane right now but anyone who has been watching 205 Live since January knows that the real action goes on between the cruiserweights.

The tournament that has been playing out on Tuesday nights to determine the new WWE Cruiserweight Champion has been must-see TV and not just from the two men who have managed to claw their way to the finals at WrestleMania 34 but from every single competitor who took part. Hell, Buddy Murphy and Kalisto put on a phenomenal match just this week that garnered various chants from “205” to “This Is Awesome“, even to “Fight Forever.” This is not an uncommon occurrence anymore.

At the start of the year, Alexander and Ali put on an absolute barnstormer that set a new bar for the division, one everyone has put their heart and soul into surpassing. Still on top, however, are the two men that are the true lifeblood of 205 Live and they have earned themselves the opportunity to compete on the ‘Grandest Stage of Them All’ for the title.

The one benefit of being on the Pre-Show this year is that these athletes could grab themselves at least 20 minutes to shine and having watched these two Cruiserweight Classic originals grow since that tournament, they could definitely pull out a massive amount in that time. These two are not just “spot-monkeys” either; they are profound storytellers and this narrative has been so carefully crafted that emotions will run high no matter who wins.

It is highly likely that Alexander will take a page out of his semi-finals opponent Roderick Strong’s playbook and spend the bout working over Ali’s back to eventually set him up for the Lumbar Check. This targeted style will definitely be accompanied by some fierce strikes as ‘Queen City’s Favorite Son’ has some of the best in the game along with some incredible feats of aerial athleticism.

It would be foolish to count out Ali, however, as even though he has felt somewhat second-tier since signing with WWE. He proves time and time again that, when he has to, he can pull out all the stops and get the job done, as seen in his quarter-finals match with the red-hot Buddy Murphy and his semi-finals bout against the pure aggression on legs that is Drew Gulak.

With Alexander seemingly being groomed for greatness before the tournament began, he has been the favorite to win the entire thing since day one and it would not be undeserved, but WWE does enjoy a nice swerve to throw their audience for a loop.

In truth, this could go either way and no one would complain but as it is on the Pre-Show, I simply can’t see them not following what seems to be the scheduled plan. It’s going to be a hell of a match and is one of the chosen few that I am most excited about but expect to see Cedric Alexander crowned the new WWE Cruiserweight Champion by the time the main card of WrestleMania 34 kicks off.

“205… This Is Awesome… Fight Forever.”

These three chants will rain down on the Superdome in full force on April 8 and with any luck, the boys from the purple brand will be given a bigger and more deserving spot when they hit up MetLife Stadium next year for WrestleMania 35.

Prediction: Cedric Alexander
