Real Reason No WWE Footage Was Used For Sting’s AEW Retirement AEW/WWE

WWE holds a lot of footage from Sting’s storied wrestling career, including his time in WCW through to his last appearance in February 2019.

With Sting’s retirement match having taken place at AEW Revolution on March 3, 2024, historical imagery has played its part in reiterating to the fans why this was an iconic moment in wrestling history.

There was, however, no footage owned by WWE used in any of the retrospectives and Dave Meltzer has revealed why.

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer revealed that WWE hadn’t been asked, stating:

“Many people wondered, given in the past Khan has allowed his talent to appear on WWE television to honor John Cena and at the Hall of Fame ceremonies, if WWE would reciprocate here. The answer is that we don’t know because WWE was never asked.”

Among the times that AEW stars have appeared on WWE programming was the induction of D-Generation X into the Hall of Fame Class of 2019.

During the induction, Triple H took a number of light-hearted jabs at Billy Gunn who had been hired by AEW in January 2019.

Gunn would react to the comments, saying that he thought it was hilarious and “well done”.
