Potential WWE Signing’s Farewell Match Announced

Potential WWE Signing’s Farewell Match Announced WWE

NJPW has announced a farewell match for former NEVER Openweight Champion Tama Tonga, following rumors that he could soon sign with WWE.

Following Tonga’s NEVER Openweight Title win at January’s Wrestle Kingdom 18 event, Tonga announced that he’d be leaving NJPW in February.

With Tonga dropping his title at the January 20 New Beginning in Nagoya show, there has been a lot of speculation about the Bullet Club founding member’s next move.

NJPW has now announced that Tonga will team with Tanga Loa for a tag-team match against El Phantasmo & Hikuleo on the February 24 New Beginning in Sapporo show.

This bout is being advertised as Tonga’s NJPW farewell.

NJPW shared the following preview for the bout:

“A pair of emotional goodbyes will see NJPW bid farewell to Tama Tonga in our third match of the night. That last bout in the cerulean blue will see a dream tag team match of GoD vs GoD, the record setting seven time IWGP Tag Team Champions of the original Tongan brothers facing the new generation and recently deposed IWGP champs in Hikuleo and ELP.

“There are no titles on the line tonight, but the prospect of going out on a high against passing a legendary torch.”

Tonga has previously been the subject of ‘internal talk’ in WWE, with it being reported in May 2023 that there had been talk about Tonga within the company for some time.

With Tama Tonga currently residing in Orlando, Florida, the city where WWE’s Performance Center is based, it has been speculated that Tonga could soon join WWE.

Kazuchika Okada will also be wrestling his final NJPW match at the February 24 NJPW event, which you can read more about right here.
