Top WWE Star Says Company Rejected Pitch For WrestleMania Defeat WWE

A top WWE star has confirmed that the company rejected a pitch they made to lose their championship at WrestleMania.

Becky Lynch became the first woman in the history of WWE to win the main event of WrestleMania back in 2019, when she defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair for both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships.

Becky went on to hold the championship for over a year, vacating the title to Asuka following her Money In The Bank victory in 2020 with Becky going off on maternity leave.

Becky seemed poised to drop the Raw Women’s Championship to Shayna Baszler at WrestleMania 36 after Shayna captured a dominant victory in that year’s Elimination Chamber match.

However, in something of a surprising result, Lynch picked up the victory over Baszler, retaining her title on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

Now, in an excerpt from Becky’s upcoming memoir ‘The Man’, Becky revealed that she recommended for Shayna to win the match at WrestleMania, but the company overruled.

She wrote:

“I had recommended that she take the title from me at WrestleMania… I had been a babyface champion for so long and could feel the audience beginning to turn on me. I had gone from underdog to top dog and such a situation can’t overstay its welcome.

“We needed to make more female contenders and what better way to do that than having them win the title on the grandest stage of them all? Everyone wins. Except me, whose request was denied. I wanted to lose, but I would actually win, so it was a loss… Sigh. Wrestling is confusing.”

Becky herself scored the victory in the Elimination Chamber this year, setting up a Women’s World Championship match with Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania.
