Scrapped WWE Plans For Real-Life Mother Storyline Revealed WWE

Shelton Benjamin has opened up on rejecting plans for his real-life mother to be involved in a storyline on WWE television.

Back in early 2006, Mama Benjamin would involve herself in Shelton Benjamin’s matches, leading the WWE star having a match winning run.

Her presence would lead to Benjamin becoming WWE Intercontinental Champion in February before she would depart a month later in March.

Mama Benjamin was played by the American comedian and actress Thea Vidale, but that hadn’t always been the plan.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Benjamin discussed Vince McMahon’s original idea, saying:

“I had a meeting with Vince (McMahon) and I was just like, ‘Okay, right now I’m not doing anything. I want to contribute.’ And I had an idea and first — and I don’t know where he came up with the mama thing.

“So when he first approached me about it, he basically said, ‘How would you feel about having your real mama on the road?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely not. There’s no way I’m going to expose my mother to this locker room.’

“Because as nice as a guy I am, I love everybody on the roster. But if one person were to say something (I didn’t like) to my real mom, I would have had a really short career.”

Benjamin was first signed to WWE in January 2000 and started his career in the OVW developmental territory before making his debut in December 2002 on SmackDown.

He would remain with the company until his release in April 2010 and would have a planned return in mid-2016 that would be cancelled due to a torn rotator cuff injury.

He would eventually sign with WWE in August 2017, appearing on SmackDown on August 22 in a tag team with Chad Gable.

He is a three-time WWE Tag Team Champion and Intercontinental Champion and is a former WWE United States Champion.

Road Dogg Brian James has recently suggested Benjamin as a new recruit for Gable’s Alpha Academy faction.
