WWE Star Feels He’s The Closest He’s Ever Been To World Championship Win

Matt Cardona has commented on being one world championship away from becoming a WWE Grand Slam champion, and his goal to win a world title.

By modern rules, WWE recognises a star as a Grand Slam champion once they have won the Intercontinental and US titles, as well as either the Undisputed WWE or the World Heavyweight title, and one of the sets of main roster tag-team championships.

Having IC, US and World Tag Team championship reigns under his belt, if Matt Cardona wins a WWE world title, he will become the 20th Grand Slam winner in company history.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Matt Cardona stated that he feels he’s currently the closest he’s ever been to the WWE Championship, noting:

“I feel like I’m the closest I’ve ever been, especially now being back in WWE. I certainly felt on the indies that I was closer to being the WWE Champion as Matt Cardona on the Indies than I ever was as Zack Ryder previously.

“This is what I said to Triple H. I said before I got re-signed, ‘I can’t hit a home run if I’m not in the game.’ I honestly believe that.

“You look at my win-loss record, okay, I lose a lot, but when I win, I win big. It just takes one win, and I’ve been counted out so many times throughout my career by the office, by the fans, by myself, and I just always come back.

“I always find a way to come back. I’m like a cockroach, you cannot kill me.”

While discussing his in-ring future, Cardona reiterated that he plans to win the WWE Championship, stating:

“I feel very blessed that I’m in the win-win situation, where I feel like I’m the top of my game. I’m 40 years old, 41 now, but I feel better now and look better now. I wrestle better now at 41 than I did when I was 21.

“You look at the landscape with WWE, the two current champions are my age or older, right? But then again, there are all these young up-and-comers, so I’ve got to be on my toes to keep up with them, and hopefully this all works out and we do an interview in a couple years, and I could talk about my WWE title win, right?

“But if it doesn’t, I found my place outside WWE, and I could always go back there, which is great, a good backup plan, but I don’t want a backup plan. This is the plan, to be the WWE Champion.”

While Cardona’s mission to win the Undisputed WWE Championship was brought up on TV earlier this year, the star has yet to win a singles match on SmackDown since his in-ring return win over Kit Wilson on January 2.

With Matt Cardona still pushing to win the big one, it would be fulfilling to see him ultimately achieve his lifelong dream.
