They say you don’t really know a person until you’ve tried to trademark their name in order to profit from their likeness.
Oh, you’ve never heard that expression? You’ve clearly never been invited to a WWE investors meeting. Because it’s been common practice for WWE to secure the rights to its performers’ names for quite some time.
So it comes as no surprise that PWInsider are reporting that WWE has in recent weeks filed several more applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to register trademarks over a number of its main roster and NXT performers.
This latter category is of particular interest, as an effort to trademark developmental talent is often seen as a precursor to a main roster call up.
On August 14 and 17, WWE filed separate applications to register trademarks over former NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler, current NXT Women’s Champion (and owner of the greatest elbow drop in wrestling today) Kairi Sane, as well as NXT Tag Team Champions and members of the Undisputed Era, Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish.
While their current standing on the NXT roster makes it unlikely that any of those mentioned will be called up to the main roster in the immediate future, the mere fact that WWE would invest the time and effort required to register trademarks over these performers clearly indicates that they are held in high regard by the ‘powers that be’.
Per PWInsider‘s report, the other WWE stars listed in the trademark applications are Mike Kanellis, Sarah Logan, Mandy Rose, Sonya Deville, Killian Dain, Alexander Wolfe, Bobby Lashley, and Corey Graves.
