It’s been a turbulent few months for WWE and as a result, it’s been a turbulent few months for Vince McMahon, who has seen more rumours about his talent leaving than I’ve seen texts that say “sorry you’re alone again this Valentine’s Day”.
What with Dean Ambrose leaving, AEW starting, rumours about the future of Ronda Rousey’s time in WWE, it must have left Vince with plenty of restless nights. Of course you never want to lose your top guys and girls, and when you’ve been so used to being able to buy the top guys and girls, the sudden idea that they may not want to hang around for eternity must be a hard pill to swallow.
So what exactly is Vince getting so uptight about? Well, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Vince “wants the perception that his guys don’t leave”, which as far as I’m aware only makes sense if you’re Vince McMahon.
Imagine being a sports coach and thinking your players are so untouchable that no-one can buy them from you. It’s the way the business works, and unless Vince has invented a way of making everyone forget when his talent leaves, people are going to notice.
WWE has been on top for so long that you can kind of understand why he doesn’t understand that people sometimes want to leave, but it’s a reality he’s gonna have to face up to.
