Kofi Kingston Reveals Massive Influence CM Punk Had On His Career

Current WWE Champion Kofi Kingston has won eight tag team titles during his 13-year spell with the company. He has held tag team gold in WWE for a total of 972 days, a company record.

Kingston has won the aforementioned eight championships with five different partners, including Xavier Woods, Big E, R-Truth, Evan Bourne and CM Punk.

CM Punk and Kofi Kingston were World Tag Team Champions for 47 days from October-December in 2008. The pair eventually dropped the belts at a house show to John Morrison and The Miz.

Speaking to ACWrestling, Kofi Kingston noted the influence that CM Punk has had on his career, particularly in its early stages.

“I was Tag Team Champions with CM Punk, which was awesome because I learned so much from him. He was one of the guys who took me under his wing when he didn’t have to. I was always grateful for that friendship. Being tag team partners with R-Truth is always fun. He’s always making you laugh. Every moment we had together was always fun. Evan Bourne, same thing. Super cool and athletic. We would try to out-do each other. It was an awesome experience to see him up-close-and-personal. I can’t possibly pick a favorite.”

After defeating Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35, Kofi Kingston has been WWE Champion for 72 days now. He will have to hold the strap for another 390 days before he surpasses former mentor CM Punk’s 492 combined days as WWE Champion.

As if that wasn’t a big enough feat, Kingston will need to be champion for another 3,968 days (nearly 11 years) before he breaks Bruno Sammartino’s company record for most combined days as WWE Champion.
