It was revealed on Raw this week that rather than the previously announced Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz match for SummerSlam this weekend, Ziggler would actually be facing WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg.
It had been reported for several weeks that Goldberg would be facing the former World Heavyweight Champion on the show. However, fans were left somewhat confused by the match choice, with very little reason being provided for the bout taking place.
It is believed that it was Goldberg who requested to come back to the company for another match. The former Universal Champion likely wanted to “remove the bad taste” after his woeful match in Saudi Arabia at Super ShowDown with The Undertaker.
With regards to his opponent, Tom Colohue is reporting that the decision to put Goldberg and Ziggler in the ring together was actually made by WWE rather than Goldberg himself.
The report states that WWE felt as if Ziggler could make Goldberg “look good”, with Dolph being selected for the match because of “his experience”:
“For his experience. Everyone looks good wrestling with Dolph. WWE loves Dolph. There’s nothing he can’t do.”
Colohue would go on to argue that WWE didn’t want to put Goldberg in the ring with a larger guy over fears that he would not be able to deliver his Jackhammer finisher properly.
At Super ShowDown, Goldberg was not able to lift The Undertaker up properly for the Jackhammer, resulting in what was a very nasty bump. Colohue notes that due to Ziggler’s smaller frame, Goldberg should be able to hit his finisher without any real problems:
“You remember the Jackhammer? I do. We all do. Dolph’s safe and he doesn’t weigh too much, really.”
