It is being reported by Dave Meltzer that WWE recently tried and failed to buy Japanese promotion Pro Wrestling NOAH in order to start NXT Japan.
It is expected that WWE is to make some kind of major announcement regarding Japan this coming Friday, but then again they described Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross being traded to SmackDown as a “blockbuster”, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet.
The report from Dave Meltzer is that WWE officials have been trying for several months to get an NXT Japan brand off the ground, and that a number of Japanese promotions have been contacted in the hopes of securing a relationship.
NOAH is one of Japan’s biggest promotions alongside the likes of Dragon Gate and All Japan, so it’s a real indicator of WWE’s targets that they tried to buy the promotion.
There is also talk that WWE is trying to sign Japanese talents to work as trainers on the new brand, but Meltzer would not name them until there was confirmation.
If it’s anything like NXT UK, NXT Japan will hoover up talent from smaller promotions, very few people will watch it and they’ll put on a very good show twice a year, so I hope you’re all looking forward to that.
