Jon Moxley has come a long way in the last year. From being down on his luck in WWE to being AEW World Champion, Moxley is one of the best feel-good stories in wrestling.
Having defeated Chris Jericho at Revolution, Moxley will now have to face a cavalcade of challengers. As a babyface, he can logically face anyone on the roster, allowing for many new possible matchups. Here, we will list the ten best potential challengers for the new champion.
10. Chris Jericho
The former champion is the first entry on this list. It remains to be seen what AEW’s stance on championship rematches will be so it may be a while before Jericho gets a shot at his belt. To date, SCU got a quick rematch for the AEW Tag Team Championships while Riho never received one for the AEW Women’s Championship.
Jericho is said to be going on tour with Fozzy during the summer months. This means any possible rematch would need to happen in the near future or he will be waiting a while. Jericho and Moxley had a very good match at Revolution and most fans would be happy to see them go at it one more time.
9. Lance Archer
AEW’s latest signee is someone with recent history with Jon Moxley. Lance Archer faced Moxley at Wrestle Kingdom 14 with Moxley defeating him to win the IWGP United States Championship in a Texas Deathmatch.
Tony Khan placed emphasis on win/loss records when talking about Archer after Revolution. This would lead one to believe that Archer would have to put together a string of wins before being awarded a championship match but if he hits the ground running he could fast track his run to the top.
8. Rey Fenix
Rey Fenix has only competed in a handful of singles matches in AEW but there are few who could put on a better match as a potential first challenger for Moxley. Similar to how Jericho defended the title against Darby Allin and Scorpio Sky on Dynamite, Moxley could benefit from getting a win over a game Fenix early in his reign.
AEW would have to find a way to get Fenix involved with the main event scene but such a thing can be done.
