The Double Gold Dash was the highlight of Wrestle Kingdom 14 and Kazuchika Okada was at the focal point of that. The former IWGP Heavyweight Champion defended his title against Kota Ibushi on the first night of action before dropping the title to Tetsuya Naito on night two.
In the lead-in to the event, Okada made it known that he had little interest in being a double champion. That is a mantra that has not changed, as Okada still has no interest in the Intercontinental title.
In an interview with njpw1972.com, Okada discussed his desire to be heavyweight champion again.
“I haven’t been watching. I didn’t see the last title match… That said, I am disappointed that I don’t have the belt, but the plan is to reset and refocus. There are things that I can do now because I’m not the champion, things that would be difficult or impossible to do if I was the champion. Even so, I have to say I’m not interested in the double championships.
It’s like I said, like I thought, the IWGP Heavyweight Championship is what I’m interested in. Just that. I honestly don’t care about the double titles, what’ll happen to them, anything like that.”
Okada won a big match over TAICHI at The New Beginning in Sapporo before New Japan had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus. As he is perhaps the greatest champion in history, it likely won’t be long before he is champion again.
