New Japan Pro Wrestling recently returned with their first show since the pandemic started. For the most part, they have been commended on how they have handled the situation. Now, President Harold Meij has talked about their decision to prioritize caution over profit.
Speaking with The Indian Express, Meij said that it is their responsibility as an industry leader to be sensible and responsible. Here is the quote:
“The responsibility we hold as an industry leader in Japan and worldwide weighs heavily on our shoulders; ultimately this was the only sensible decision we could have taken as a responsible corporate citizen. A business must be viewed as a long-term entity, and I believe our decision to side with caution over profit will in the long term be seen to have been the right one.”
Since returning, New Japan shows have been very cautious. No fans are in attendance, all the ringside staff wear masks, and they wipe down the ring at intermission. This is significantly more than what most American promotions have been doing. The company has run six shows since returning on June 15 and are building towards the conclusion of the New Japan Cup.
