Everyone remembers Charlotte Flair winning the 2020 Royal Rumble match. It was also reported that this was not the original plan for the match.
Fightful Select (subscription required) is now reporting that Shayna Baszler was originally planned to win the match. Baszler was the betting favourite going into the match so this should not be considered a surprise.
The report says the decision for Charlotte to win the match was made just hours before the event began. Charlotte, of course, went on to challenge Rhea Ripley for the NXT Women’s Championship at WrestleMania, successfully capturing the title for the second time.
Baszler still appeared in the match, entering at number 30 and finishing as the runner-up. She was also at one time scheduled to defeat Becky Lynch for the Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania. While she did face Lynch at WrestleMania, she did not win and Baszler has fallen down the card since.
It was reported earlier today that Baszler wrestled at a recent set of tv tapings. This marked her first appearance since May 12 although this match was merely taped for Main Event, not Raw.
