There is no denying that AEW has been putting out a fantastic product after just over one full year in business. The promotion has had some of the best matches and storylines in wrestling this year.
However, arguably the biggest criticism that many people, myself included, have had with AEW thus far has been its booking and treatment of the women’s division, which has left a lot to be desired.
This is why fans were very excited to hear that AEW would be launching a women’s tag tournament over the Summer. The hope was that we’d now see more meaningful women’s matches on TV every week.
Well it seems like that won’t be happening, as AEW announced on last night that the matches for the tournament are going to air every Monday before Raw on YouTube, and won’t be on TV.
The show will begin every Monday at 7pm on the east coast, 4pm in the west coast, and midnight over here in the UK. The show will finish just before Monday Night Raw starts.
Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio said that AEW was “testing the waters” with this new kind of tournament. If it goes over well, these sorts of YouTube-exclusive tournaments could become regular things.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think this is a good idea. AEW should be putting some of these matches on Dynamite, to make them feel more important and subsequently get more people interested in the women’s division.
This feels somewhat like the Mixed Match Challenge that WWE aired on Facebook, which no one really cared about. AEW should be making an effort to get people invested in their women’s division.
Last night on AEW Dynamite, we saw a former WWE star make a return to wrestling to confirm that she’ll be teaming with Nyla Rose as part of the tournament. You can find out who by clicking here.
