Many WWE fans have posted comments and thoughts about Retribution members revealing themselves this past Monday on WWE Raw. The angle has faced criticism for the new names given to the wrestlers involved, the masks, and the overall story.
Now, former WWE Executive Producer Eric Bischoff has given his two cents on the Retribution story on WWE Raw. Let’s just say it wasn’t positive.
This is what Eric had to say on his 83 Weeks Podcast:
“I think it sucks.”
Eric continued:
“Why are they there? What’s the story? What is the inciting incident? What is the motivation? What is the reason that they’re there? …It maybe had the potential of being a good idea before it wasn’t.
“I’ve learned this over the last 10-15 years more than I knew it at the time when I was actually in the business. Whatever storyline you’re going to launch, whatever character you’re going to launch, that angle, that story has to begin with either an inciting incident – as you would say in the film industry – or an angle, as you would refer to it probably in wrestling. But there has to be a reason for it. You have to be able to answer the question, ‘Why?'”
While Eric Bischoff has definitely received his fair share of criticism over the years, the questions he asks are certainly valid questions. He also appears to be a follower of Simon Sinek and the idea that people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. So, start with why.
As for this faction, clearly, they are there for Retribution. Probably for the silly, ridiculous names WWE gave them. Hey, but at least they got contracts.
