It was reported yesterday Vince McMahon himself sent talent an email letting them know they had 4 weeks to end any existing contracts with 3rd party applications like Twitch or Cameo. This apparently includes accounts using wrestlers’ real names.
Earlier today, Andrew Yang tweeted he had heard WWE was forcing talents to sign new contracts which included transitioning Twitch accounts over to the company.
Now, according to Wrestling Inc., more details have emerged on what those contracts contain and it isn’t just Twitch. Apparently, WWE is also forcing talents to sign over their Cameo accounts. The contracts apparently include the following:
- Talent affirm that WWE is their authorized representative
- Talent authorize Cameo to make all payments and any other compensations to WWE
- Cameo will not be made a party in any dispute between the talent and WWE
- The authorization can be cancelled at any time only if the account is cancelled.
Additionally, PWInsider is reporting the talents they spoke to are concerned for several reasons. First, some talent have reported making as much as they actually do from their WWE contracts via Twitch and Cameo. Bottom line, the talents who made money from Twitch will be taking a major hit to their pocketbooks as part of this new policy.
Secondly, it seems they know the next step will be WWE forcing them to make streaming appearances as part of their contracts. This means their Twitch appearances will just turn into glorified WWE appearances instead of having creative control and connecting to fans in a more meaningful way.
In the long run, WWE is hurting its talent and its fans by making this policy. Of course, wrestlers are stuck between a rock and hard place. Do they speak up and risk the repercussions? Or do they keep quiet and let WWE take money out of their pockets.
Either way, this doesn’t seem like what’s best for business.
