A WWE NXT star who returned recently after a months-long hiatus has spoken about how he can carry a brand if tasked with doing so.
Pete Dunne was stuck in the UK for most of the pandemic but returned the States in late October, joining Pat McAfee’s heel faction in the process.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Dunne opened up about his time away from the ring and how it could actually help him in the long run. He said:
“I couldn’t leave the UK because of the travel ban, so it became a chance to reset my goals. I’ve done this since I was 12 years old and this was the most time off I’ve ever had. When it’s your job and it’s day–in and day–out, you’re so close to it that you can lose focus of the bigger picture. I was able to get in the best shape of my life and completely focus on what I wanted. The NXT title is atop that list.
“I can carry a brand. I did it in the UK with an entire brand basically built around me, and my in-ring work speaks for itself. Now I’m with Pat McAfee, who is incredibly charismatic. It’s a winning combination.”
Dunne’s first match back was on this past Wednesday’s episode of NXT where he beat Kyle O’Reilly in a ladder match.
The win earned his WarGames team the advantage against the Undisputed ERA at TakeOver on December 6.
