Following a fantastic main event on Raw last night between Drew McIntyre and Keith Lee, WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg returned to TV to challenge McIntyre to a WWE Championship match at Royal Rumble.
This is Goldberg’s first appearance on WWE TV since WrestleMania 36 in April 2020, a show that saw him drop the Universal Championship to Raw star Braun Strowman.
Dave Meltzer has provided some additional updates on the feud on Wrestling Observer Radio, including why it is happening and when WWE decided this is the direction they wanted to go.
Meltzer explained that the decision to have Goldberg challenge Drew McIntyre for The Royal Rumble was made over the weekend once Vince McMahon looked at the roster and thought there was “nobody ready” to challenge for the WWE Championship.
It was previously reported that Goldberg was likely going to challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 37 in March, but there is no word on if those plans have now changed.
We will keep you updated on any potential updates and new pieces of information that emerges regarding this feud.
