Former WWE Women’s Champion Candice Michelle has recently talked about the clause in her contract that allowed her more freedom outside of WWE.
In 2005, Michelle went viral for appearing in a GoDaddy commercial that played during the Super Bowl. She earned the nickname “GoDaddy girl” before going on to star in more controversial advertising for the company.
Michelle has recently revealed that she had a clause in her WWE contract allowing her to pursue outside projects. In an interview with WrestlingInc, Michelle noted that since she was discovered through Hollywood, and so projects like her website and GoDaddy couldn’t be touched by WWE, and didn’t require company approval.
Speaking to WrestlingInc, she said:
“So I had a clause in my contract which allowed me to do that. Because I was coming from Hollywood, I just had a different type of contract from the average wrestler who comes from the indie scene or comes from the wrestling school.
“My website was off-limits and certain things on there were off limits that they weren’t allowed to take away from me or have control over, and GoDaddy just happened to be one of those.”
With WWE recently controversially banning third party accounts, Michelle’s clause is extremely topical.
With some talent currently contesting WWE’s ban, it seems like these exceptions will continue to be assessed on a case by case basis.
