WWE legend Kurt Angle has opened up about his last WWE run, discussing which competitor was on their way to “main event status”.
Kurt Angle wrestled his final match against Baron Corbin at WrestleMania 35. Many fans didn’t think this match was a satisfying conclusion to Angle’s career.
The Olympian has often discussed this match change, with Jason Jordan originally slated to be Angle’s WrestleMania opponent. Angle worked close with Jordan, who was revealed to be his illegitimate son as part of a storyline.
Speaking on The Kurt Angle Show Podcast, Angle talked about his excitement to work with Jordan. Discussing his in-ring progress, Angle theorised that Jordan was on his way to the main event before his career-shortening neck injury.
Here is the full quote:
“I was excited because I wanted to pair up with Jason and Chad (Gable) when they were tag team partners. I wanted to wrestle and I wanted to be the world champion and have them be the tag team champions just like Team Angle. I thought it made a lot of sense and they decided that I was going to have an illegitimate son and they weren’t sure who it was going to be. They decided to pick Jason over Chad, I’m not sure why, it might have been a politically correct move.
“I was happy, I was excited about it because Jason was improving. He was on his way to main event status until he hurt his neck, that’s when the program ended. I was stuck high and dry without a partner for the next WrestleMania (35) because that’s who I was going to wrestle was Jason.”
Jason Jordan wrestled his last match at Royal Rumble 2018. He unfortunately suffered a serious neck injury so transitioned from a competitor to a backstage producer.
Angle also confirmed that he intends to stay retired. Despite pointing out that wrestling retirements are rarely permanent, Angle noted that he doesn’t see himself returning to the ring.
