On the December 31 edition of AEW Rampage, Tay Conti & Anna Jay defeated Penelope Ford & The Bunny in a tag-team street fight. In a statement to the Toronto Star (subscription required), WWE cited this match while describing how AEW’s content differs from WWE TV.
The WWE statement read:
“If you look at the gory self-mutilation that bloodied several women in the December 31 event on TNT, it quickly becomes clear that these are very different businesses. We had an edgier product in the ‘Attitude’ era and in a 2022 world, we don’t believe that type of dangerous and brutal display is appealing to network partners, sponsors, venues, children, or the general public as a whole.”
This is not the first time WWE has made a comment about the edginess of AEW’s product. During a 2019 conference call, Vince McMahon stated that WWE has graduated from ‘gory crap’, and will not do ‘blood and guts’.
In a call in July 2021, McMahon explained that he doesn’t consider AEW competition the way he considered WCW competition back in the day.
