More insight has been provided on the situation surrounding AEW’s budget for new signings.
Following numerous high profile signings in 2021, Tony Khan stated that he now has to be more ‘discerning than ever’ with future talent acquisitions. Since then, a number of notable names became All Elite, including Danhausen and Keith Lee.
Per Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW budget for new signings has a limit, with the promotion reportedly not making a play for Kevin Owens, and another WWE star whose contract was reportedly up. AEW reportedly didn’t make any offers because they wouldn’t have been able to match WWE’s offers.
The report pointed out that this budget won’t increase unless AEW secures a higher paying TV deal, which won’t be until at least the start of 2024.
In a recent interview, Tony Khan explained what goes into deciding whether to offer a new contract, or choosing to part ways with a star after their contract expires.
Cody Rhodes’ AEW departure reportedly came after a financial dispute with Khan. The former AEW EVP is expected to sign with WWE, who has reportedly offered him a big contract.
