Tony Khan has explained CM Punk’s current quest for an AEW World Title Match through a series of contests against top contenders.
Since defeating MJF in a Dog Collar Match at Revolution, CM Punk has set his sights on the top prize in All Elite Wrestling by gaining a series of wins against a variety of opponents.
Speaking with Scott Fishman of TV Insider, the AEW President addressed Punk’s current storyline.
When asked if the storyline was planned out or has happened organically based on his tweets, Khan answered:
The specificity of opponents was organic when we talked. That was very much in our plans to use the odyssey of CM Punk — a quest to take on top contenders of different shapes, sizes, and experience levels. Big stars. Young stars who I believe benefited from being in the ring with CM Punk. Even veterans and unheralded veterans.
When talking about tonight’s Dynamite where CM Punk will face Dustin Rhodes, Tony said:
I’ve been a fan of Dustin since I was a really young child. I think he is an awesome person and a great wrestler. I really value Dustin. I had wanted to see CM Punk vs. Dustin Rhodes for a long time. Dustin picked up a huge win over Lance Archer on Rampage. Dustin Rhodes or CM Punk, I think either one would be a great championship challenger.
As previously mentioned, Tony Khan also addressed the reaction from fans to his tweet about anti-AEW bots in the same interview.
