A new report has indicated that WWE never planned to have a tag team title unification match at WrestleMania Backlash.
It had previously been announced that Raw Tag Team Champions RK-Bro would face off against SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos in a Winner Takes All unification bout during this Sunday’s pay-per-view.
It has since been stated that instead, The Usos will team with Roman Reigns to do battle with Drew McIntyre & RK-Bro in six-man tag action on the show.
Per the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, this six-man tag bout was always internally planned, with WWE reportedly never planning for the title unification bout to go ahead.
Dave Meltzer wrote:
“The little bit we do know is that the six-man tag match was always the planned match. There was never a plan to do the unification match. So while most feel this was the usual weekly plans changed, it was not. That also explains why last week nobody would confirm Reigns vs. McIntyre to me, only that Reigns would be in the main event.
“What we were told is that the decision was made to save Reigns vs. McIntyre for the bigger summer shows. The idea is with the smaller building and coming four weeks after WrestleMania, the interest level wasn’t going to be that high, and they need big matches for the bigger shows.”
This is not the first report to claim that WWE advertised something that they didn’t actually plan to deliver on in recent weeks, with Meltzer previously reporting that WWE never planned to have Brock Lesnar wrestle on this weekend’s show, despite originally being listed for the event on WWE.com.
