It’s being reported that Vince McMahon has been impressed with the work of new WWE SmackDown star Gunther, formerly known as WALTER.
Gunther was called up to SmackDown alongside Ludwig Kaiser (Marcel Barthel) in April after spending a few months in NXT 2.0 following his move to the US in the wake of spending a couple of years on the NXT UK brand.
Since his move to SmackDown, Gunther has gone undefeated, and on tonight’s show, he challenges Ricochet for the Intercontinental Championship.
According to a new report from Fightful Select, Gunther has impressed “many people of influence” in WWE, but it’s not just in recent weeks that this has happened.
There are many things that have endeared Gunther to higher-ups going back quite some time, namely his “willingness to play ball” with all the changes that have been made to his career and presentation recently.
These include his move to the US itself since he was against doing that in previous years, his dedication to diet and training to get in shape, the impromptu nature of Imperium splitting and leaving Fabian Aichner (now repackaged as Giovanni Vinci) in NXT, and his willingness to undergo a name change.
It’s not just the stuff in the background that has impressed WWE officials though, as Fightful’s report states that at least one source indicated that Vince McMahon himself has specifically been impressed with Gunther’s in-ring work so far.
Stay tuned to WrestleTalk.com for our live coverage of SmackDown later tonight to find out if Gunther can capture his first main roster championship in the form of the Intercontinental Title.
