This year’s WWE Elimination Chamber event is slightly different from recent years, and the reason for that has come to light.
Usually, the Elimination Chamber matches will set up the top title matches for WrestleMania, but this time, the men’s Chamber is just for the United States Championship instead.
Obviously that’s because Cody Rhodes is already challenging Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania via his Royal Rumble win, but there’s also more to the decision.
The planned main event for Elimination Chamber is of course the highly anticipated Reigns vs Sami Zayn match, taking place in Zayn’s hometown of Montreal.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Daily Update, the feeling in WWE is that Reigns vs Zayn is such a strong match, it simply “doesn’t matter” what’s on the rest of the show.
That explains why the company was happy to go with a men’s Chamber match that most people would say has lower stakes than usual.
Coming out of Raw on Janaury 30, the US Title Chamber match is currently Austin Theory defending against Seth Rollins, Bronson Reed and Johnny Gargano, with two others to be decided next week.
Next week’s qualifiers will be Angelo Dawkins vs Damian Priest, and Montez Ford vs Elias.
The women’s Elimination Chamber match this year will decide who challenges Bianca Belair for the Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania since Royal Rumble winner Rhea Ripley chose to challenge Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown title.
So far, qualified for the women’s Chamber are Asuka, Raquel Rodriguez, Nikki Cross and Liv Morgan.
As we’ve covered already, Meltzer also mentioned that Brock Lesnar is currently scheduled to be part of the Chamber show.
