The discussion regarding which match will be the main event for the first night of WrestleMania 39 on April 1 is at an all-time high.
Dave Meltzer noted that the SmackDown Women’s Championship showdown between Charlotte Flair and Royal Rumble winner Rhea Ripley was slated to be the main event in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter due to ‘political reasons’.
In an update from Fightful Select (subscription required), several people in the company who would typically be in the know about that sort of thing, as well as many talent associated with it, have not been informed that the Rhea vs Charlotte match will be the main event.
Fightful noted that the ‘political reasons’ mentioned in the report from the Observer were simply that there was not a women’s main event on last year’s WrestleMania show for either night.
The report also noted that, at one point, the Usos vs Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn match was slated to be the main event of the show’s first night, and that there have been several people within the company that have been pushing for it to close the show.
