Backstage news has emerged on Jay White signing with AEW after appearing on last night’s Dynamite, instead of joining WWE.
White reportedly had interest from both companies for some time, and at some points it even looked like WWE was the more likely destination.
One clue that pointed in that direction was him losing matches in NJPW with the stipulation he couldn’t wrestle in the Japanese promotion again.
If he joined WWE, he wouldn’t be able to wrestle in New Japan anyway, but in AEW, that option would have been there, as we’ve seen with several people on the roster.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer confirmed White had the choice between AEW and WWE, and chose AEW.
Meltzer said:
“I’m surprised because if he’s with AEW, he could go back to New Japan in theory, but he lost those matches that said he couldn’t.
“WWE was after him. It was his choice between the two sides, and this was the side he chose.
“It’s a feather in the cap of AEW and Tony Khan – he got the guy. That’s a good thing for AEW, now they have to use him the right way.”

White made a surprise appearance on Dynamite last night, as he and Juice Robinson attacked Ricky Starks before Robinson and Starks were supposed to have a match.
