With the new WWE World Heavyweight Championship being revealed on April 24’s episode of WWE Raw, more details have emerged.
The new championship belt was revealed by Triple H with the first champion set to be crowned on May 27 at WWE Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia.
The origins of the decision to bring in another top WWE Championship to sit alongside the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship held by Roman Reigns has now been revealed.
According to Dave Meltzer, the decision dates back to April 2022 and the WrestleMania that would see the top titles unified in the first place!
In the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Meltzer states:
“The idea of bringing back the second title dates back literally to when the titles were unified at the April 3, 2022, WrestleMania show in Dallas when Roman Reigns beat Brock Lesnar.
“We had been told before the match that the company felt it needed two titles, but also based on the Mania stipulation, it had to wait a certain length of time before creating the second one”
It was recently reported that a strong candidate for the new championship is Seth Rollins.
As noted previously, Rollins notably cut a passionate promo following the title’s announcement.
In the promo, he would say that it is viewed as an opportunity to have a championship that’s about more than politics and part-timers.
By contrast, Finn Balor took his own approach to laying claim on the new championship on social media.
