Given the excellence of Roman Reigns run as the Tribal Chief of the Bloodline, its almost easy to forget the lows the current Undisputed Universal Champion went through prior to his heel turn in the summer of 2020.
From 2014-2020 Reigns competed as the ‘big dog’, a character that despite WWE’s best, continuous efforts never truly clicked with the WWE audience.
The babyface role always seemed a mismatch for Reigns, and only limited his potential to grow as a performer, something that according to his current special counsel Paul Heyman, came to a true head in late 2019 during a poorly received feud with Baron Corbin.
Speaking on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast, Heyman revealed that Reigns’ limit was pushed by the Corbin feud, which pushed his desire for drastic character reinvention.
Heyman said:
“The feud rivalry story with Baron Corbin over dog food and the infamous sufferin succotash promo had weighed on him enough to where he said, ‘I’ve had enough.
“I’ve reached the cap. I can’t go any further.
“As the big dog I’ve peaked. and as an athlete, I haven’t peaked as a performer.
“I’ve barely scratched the surface.
I have so much more to offer and since I’m taking time off, I’m not coming back as the same person.'”
While Reigns would continue into 2020 with the same character, he would take much of the first half of the year off from WWE.
However, upon his return at SummerSlam that year, Reigns returned with a massive change in attitude and the rest is history.
Heyman recently revealed who exactly permitted both his paring with Reigns and also the Tribal Chief’s heel turn altogether – click this link to find out more.
